First Grade Families,
I hope you are all enjoying a relaxing three .day weekend! We have many exciting things coming up this week.
This Tuesday September 4th we will be hosting our Singapore and Spalding Night. New and returning families please join us for a hands-on, interactive workshop highlighting the techniques and teaching strategies for Singapore and Spalding. You will have the opportunity to experience sample lessons, receive homework pointers and help and much, much more.
The evening will be divided into two parts. If your child is in section A or B you will attend Spalding workshop first, from 6:00-6:40. If your child is in section C or D you will attend the Singapore workshop first also from 6:00-6:40. From 6:50-7:30 you will rotate.
Please continue to practice phonogram cards 1-54
your, you, out, time, may, into, him, today, look, did

This week we will begin reading Owl at Home. If you have not already sent in a copy for your child please have him or her bring it to school on Tuesday. I do have a few extra copies, please reach out to me if you are unable to get the book. I will be emailing you individually to remind you who still needs a book.
We will also look at sentence structure, the meaning of "The Land of Nod" and begin memorizing our September poem The Pasture by Robert Louis Stevenson.
We are continuing to work through addition problems. This week we will specifically be looking at how to solve addition problems using number bonds. Please continue to work on math facts using numbers 1-5. In class we flip over number cards 1-5 to solve problems. Using a regular deck of cards with these numbers is a fun and easy way to squeeze in extra practice.
This week we will begin our unit on habitats. We will explain what a habitat is and why living things live in habitats to which they are particularly suited.
We launch our unit on Ancient Egypt this week. We will be discussing the Nile and its seasonal floods and the role it has played in farming. One of our activities will be creating a model of The Nile. If you are able to donate sugar cubes, salt dough, paint or plain paper plates please let me know. We will also be in need of a few parents to help prep projects at home in the coming weeks. You can email me directly if you are interested.
Thank you for all of your support, the start of our year together has been strong and we are looking forward to all that is to come.
