First Grade Families:
It's hard to believe that August is on its way out and that we are heading into our fourth full week of school! By now we are settled into our routines and fully immersed in our exciting and challenging curriculum. Last week your child had both Spalding and math homework. If you have questions about these procedures please reach out to me individually via email.
This week we have volunteer night on Thursday August 30th. If you are able and willing to commit to serving your child's class 1-2 hours per week this training is for you. If you are interested in volunteering and unable to attend please let me know. All volunteers must be fingerprinted.
If you are able to help send in supplies from home I am in need of:
White salt dough (about 8 batches)
Sugar cubes (6 boxes)
Brown paint (1 large or 3 small acrylic)
Blue paint (2 large or 5 small)
* Please email me if you are able to donate, supplies will be needed after labor day. Paint and sugar cubes can be brought in earlier.

This week in literature we will continue to read different versions of Tom Thumb. Many folktales from different cultures around the world feature similar characters, plots, settings and details. One such familiar character is Tom Thumb. The earliest know version of this tale in English, "The History of Tom Thumbe," by Richard Johnson was first published in 1621. Other versions are found in France, Germany, Denmark, Japan and India. We will explore the similarities, differences and backgrounds of Issun Boshi, Little Finger of the Watermelon Patch, Tom Thumb and Thumbelina.
This week we will wrap up our unit on number bonds. Our test will be this Tuesday. On Wednesday we will continue to work through procedures for our math groups. We are looking for one or two volunteers each Wednesday to help facilitate this beginning in September. This would be a year-long commitment. If you are interested please let me know.
Later in the week will move into Unit 3- Addition Within 10. Scholars will make number stories and equations for addition within 10.
This week we will wrap up our unit on Ancient Mesopotamia. Our final project will be a map of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers with a ship that moves up and down the Tigris. Scholars will be able to explain how the rivers facilitated trade long ago. We will review and check for understanding on Wednesday. Thursday we begin our unit on Ancient Egypt. We will discuss the importance of the Nile River.
This week we will look further into what matter is and learn how matter changes physically and chemically. We will discuss the water cycle, complete a matter sort assessment and conduct experiments.
